Rotary Mental Health First Aid Course

From May 2013 to May 2019 the Rotary Clubs of Randwick and Maroubra offered subsidized accredited Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses to improve the understanding of mental health in our local community.

However, the Australian community picked up on the need for these mental health first aid courses to such an extent that the need for Rotary to run the courses expired.

The 12-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid Certificate course presented by trainers accredited by MHFA Australia teaches members of the public first aid skills for helping people experiencing a mental health crisis, mental health problems or the early onset of mental illness.

MHFA Australia courses on offer can be found at and search for available courses in NSW, which brings up all the courses in Sydney as well as NSW.

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a mental health crisis situation.

Developing mental health problems covered are:
• Depression
• Anxiety problems
• Psychosis
• Substance use problems

Mental health crisis situations covered are:
• Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
• Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called deliberate self-harm)
• Panic attacks
• Traumatic events
• Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
• Severe psychotic states
• Aggressive behaviours

All Standard MHFA Courses teach how to give mental health first aid using the MHFA Action Plan ALGEE.

After successful completion of the course and the online assessment, a 3-Year accreditation as a Standard Mental Health First Aider is available.

Participant Testimonial (Name Supplied):

“Within 24 hours of completing this course I encountered a potential suicide event in my own home with a dinner guest who was not well known to me.

I was blown away by the immediate recall I had from the course where it felt like I moved over and our course facilitator moved into my body and all the course guidance came pouring out. Absolutely amazing and I felt so confident with all I did and said. The outcome is outstanding with the person I helped never having looked back. The best 2 days I have ever invested in community service- a life saver!”
